Commenting ahead of the announcement of the new price cap by Ofgem [1], Jess Ralston, Head of Energy at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:

"Millions of people living in leaky homes are facing a bleak start to 2024 with around £700 extra on bills to heat and power their homes. It didn’t have to be this way. The Government has presided over a slowdown in home insulation for struggling households during a gas crisis. The PM’s decision to scrap insulation requirements for landlords means renters are now locked into higher energy bills for years to come. The Autumn Statement included nothing of note on energy efficiency.

"If the billions spent subsidising gas bills in the past two years had been invested in insulation, we could be shielded from future volatility in gas prices. Insulating homes means less gas demand, less gas imports and greater energy independence. With gas prices set to stay two to three times higher for the rest of the decade, and always susceptible to interference from figures like Putin, families are currently set to be colder and poorer this winter and potentially for many winters to come."
