Comment on Glasgow as host city for UK UN climate summit bid

Commenting on the announcement that Glasgow would be the host city if, as anticipated, the UK and Italy joint bid for the 2020 UN climate summit (COP26) is successful, Richard Black, director of the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:

“Today’s announcement signals that Boris Johnson’s cabinet is dead serious about hosting next year’s pivotal UN climate summit.

“And while the final choice remains to be made, a UK-hosted summit, on the back of the recent net zero commitment, has a lot of logic behind it, giving Government a platform for bringing other nations into some kind of ‘net zero club’, putting the world closer to avoiding dangerous climate change.

“The choice of Glasgow is intriguing – simultaneously referencing one of the Industrial Revolution’s powerhouses and acknowledging that Scotland currently leads the UK in cutting emissions.”
