Do you want to help inform how the UK understands and debates transport policy and the role of EVs in the net zero transition? Do you enjoy making complex issues easier to understand for a wide audience, including journalists, decision-makers and the public?
The Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) is a nonprofit organisation providing independent, evidence-based insight on the UK’s energy and climate landscape. We help inform public debate and support better decision-making at a critical moment for the UK’s net zero transition.
We are looking for a Head of Transport with existing policy expertise in transport, electrification, or decarbonisation to lead one of ECIU’s most high-profile programme areas. This role is ideal for someone who already understands the policy, political, and media dynamics shaping the UK’s net zero transition, and is ready to step into a hands-on and collaborative role in a purpose-driven environment.
About the role
As Head of Transport, you will lead ECIU’s established transport programme, combining strategy, analysis, communications, and stakeholder engagement.
You will lead on the strategy and delivery of the transport programme. You will have your finger on the pulse of policy developments and closely monitor evidence gaps and narrative developments to support strategic planning around key moments. You’ll produce and commission analysis, reports and briefings to inform the debate and support responsible coverage of transport issues. You’ll work with our communications team to produce outputs and provide internal and external briefings on transport related issues.
You’ll be a visible figurehead for this workstream, acting as a media spokesperson and representing ECIU externally including with journalists, funders and stakeholders.
Currently this programme has a focus on electric vehicles and electrification of transport, so existing knowledge of EVs and the automobile industry is important.

- Understanding of and interest in climate change and transport.
- Some understanding or experience of how policy is developed, and factors that influence the process.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex ideas in clear, concise language for a range of audiences.
- Ability to analyse data and summarise key insights in accessible, engaging formats.
- Experience of stakeholder engagement including media and policymakers
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, responding to emerging stories and shifting political developments.
- Experience in journalism, public affairs, policy or communications, particularly on technical or high-profile topics.
Desirable
- Media spokesperson experience
- Experience briefing senior stakeholders
- Experience working in the transport, climate, energy, or environment sector.
