Commenting on figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showing a sharp drop in new car registrations in April, Dr Jonathan Marshall, Head of Analysis at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said: “Yet more despair in the automotive sector will only hasten the need for Government intervention to stop one of the UK’s crown jewels succumbing to the coronavirus crisis. Having talked about the need for a sustainable and resilient recovery, this gives the Government an opportunity to showcase forward-thinking actions that can spark a resurgence in British carmakers.

“With the direction of travel clear, action to underpin clean technologies such as electric and self-driving vehicles, fuel cell and battery technologies, and an extensive charging network will bring a huge boost to UK PLC. Manufacturing opportunities across the supply chain could support 80,000 high-skilled, future-proofed jobs within a decade, while showcasing British engineering excellence, shoring up our vibrant tech sector, and getting the UK back on track to meet its climate targets"
