The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit today says farewell to one of its Advisory Board members, John Palmer, the Earl of Selborne.

John has dedicated much of his career to advocating the cause of environmental and agricultural issues. A prominent ecological expert, John has a personal interest in agriculture through his farm, Blackmoor Estate, in Hampshire.

From 1997-2000, he was President of the Royal Geographical Society, from 2003-2009 he chaired the board of trustees of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and since 2006 he has been the Chairman of the Foundation for Science and Technology. He has also guided the work of other environmental boards and committees.

Since becoming a member of the House of Lords in 1971, John has regularly served on the Science and Technology Committee and has helped shape governmental policy surrounding science and technology in the United Kingdom.

Selborne was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) in 1987 and Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) in 2011 for his services to science.

“John has made significant contributions to the UK through his work and dedication to environmental issues. We’ve really enjoyed working with John and wish him the best for the future.” said ECIU Director Richard Black.
