Commenting on new government data published today [1] showing applications for heat pumps via the Boiler Upgrade Scheme have almost tripled between September and October - and are more than double the average rate prior to the announcement that the grant would be increased to £7,500 [2] - Simon Cran-McGreehin, Head of Analysis, said:

"With the lingering gas crisis ensuring that energy bills are set to be as high this winter as they were last winter, it's little wonder that the boost in heat pump funding has struck a chord with households who want to cut their gas dependence.

"But this one bright spot stands in contrast with the other policies announced in the PM's net zero u-turn, not least cancelling energy efficiency upgrades and indefinitely leaving millions of renters to live in colder homes with higher bills."
