Commenting on the publication today of a zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate for the UK [1], Colin Walker, Transport Analyst at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU)said:

“The mandate will give the industry some of what it wants which is certainty in the race for electrification. But with the US and EU putting pedal to the metal on securing EV investments, does the Government have anything up its sleeve to build battery factories and ensure the UK’s car industry doesn’t fall behind?

“The targets broadly track what EV sales are expected to do anyway. If the Government were to increase those targets that would further speed the growth of the second-hand EV market enabling more drivers to access the cheaper running costs which can be hundreds of pounds a year.”
