Commenting on comments from China's President Xi Jinping saying that the country would commit to new climate targets by the end of the year [1], Gareth Redmond-King, Head of International Programme at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:
"The world is getting on with progressing towards net zero emissions, no doubt conscious of the fact that climate change doesn’t stop until we stop adding carbon to the atmosphere, but that also these technologies are the growth industries of today and tomorrow.
"Countries committing to deliver new climate targets shows the multilateral process, with all of its frustrations, is still marching on in spite of the US pulling back. As COP29 showed, along with agreements at the biodiversity COP and the International Maritime Organisation more recently, international co-operation is very much alive.
"The ultimate proof of the pudding will be in the eating, but with the EU expected to produce new climate targets too and the UK already having done so last year, there is more of a race to the top than a race to the bottom, with the US currently sat on the sideline - albeit with plenty of American states and cities still pressing ahead."
