Commenting on the news that Anthony Albanese has won the Australian election with his Labor party winning a majority, Gareth Redmond-King, Head of International Programme at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:
"Just days after Canada rejected a party that had sought to emulate US MAGA tactics and elected former UN climate envoy Mark Carney, Australia has rejected a Trump-style anti-renewables assault on climate policy.
"The opposition promised taxes on electric vehicles, expansion of gas, and attempts to keep the country’s coal plants on life support. Australian voters have instead backed more ambition on renewables, and a bid to work with some of the communities most threatened by climate change to host next year’s UN climate summit. Despite the rhetoric of the hard right in many countries, people everywhere are concerned about climate change, and want their governments to act. They know that net zero emissions is the only solution we have to stop putting carbon into the atmosphere, halt climate change, and avoid ever more dangerous and costly impacts long into the future."
