Commenting on the SMMT’s data for used car sales in the UK in the first quarter of 2025 Colin Walker, Head of Transport at the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit, said:

“On top of new figures showing new EV sales are up 35%, [1] this is further proof that driver demand for EVs is very much there.

“The price tags on new EVs are falling and they are already cheaper over their lifetimes than petrol cars, but with EVs at price parity with petrol on the second hand market, families picking up a used EV can save themselves £1,600 a year. [2] Given new cars hit the second-hand market after three to four years, these second-hand savings will only become more widely available if more new EVs are being sold. However, recent changes by the Government to its EV sales targets could slow the growth of new EV sales, and the growth of second hand EV market, leaving more drivers stuck with the higher bills that come from driving petrols and hybrids.”
