Commenting on a new report [1] by the Energy Security and Net Zero Committee which calls on the Government to "to provide far longer-term certainty for its retrofit support schemes" and rumours that Labour plans to slash the Warm Homes Plan [2], Jess Ralston, Head of Energy from the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:

"A Winter Fuel Payment U-turn would help those struggling later this year as gas prices are still well above pre-crisis levels, but this is a sticking plaster solution for the massive lack of investment in insulating our homes over the past decade.

"The UK has some of the coldest, dampest homes in Europe that waste energy and unless we help those struggling to insulate, tax payers and bill payers who ultimately pay for subsidised bills will continue to pay over the odds for the UK’s leaky homes.

"The Government has already delayed better standards for rented homes. Any further delays to insulation programmes leaves the UK bill payers at the mercy of gas prices and foreign actors like Putin, with increased costs to the NHS from those living in cold, damp homes"
