Commenting on the EU's announcement that it is on track to meet its 2030 target [1], Gareth Redmond-King, Head of International Programme at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit said:
“The EU’s announcement that it is on track for its 2030 target, and committed to 90% cuts by 2040 is powerful evidence that global momentum towards net zero is very much there. As is news recently that China’s phenomenal investment in renewables could now be resulting in their emissions falling.
"The jeopardy for the UK is in continuing to compete for the investment and clean industries which last year added £83 billion to the economy, growing three times faster than the economy as a whole. With 85% of clean energy investment taking place outside of the US, the rest of the world is getting on with the job.
"Beyond the jobs and factories though, and with fresh warnings today from the World Meteorological Organisation [2], the imperative to reach net zero - the only way to halt climate change - is clear.”
