Commenting on the Government's new national security strategy [1], Gareth Redmond-King, Head of International Programme at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:
“Intensifying climate change impacts pose a growing threat to international stability, national security, and global supply chains, including our food. Speeding up the clean energy transition to cut greenhouse gas emissions to net zero is the only solution to arresting climate change and avoiding ever more dangerous threats.
"The national security strategy clearly recognises this: reaffirming commitment to multilateralism, climate leadership, and the shift towards renewables as the route to energy security. The UK is acknowledging that strengthening defence and national security, and tackling climate change, are two sides of the same coin.”
Lt Gen Richard Nugee (retd) CB CVO CBE, former British Army officer who served as Defence Services Secretary, and Chief of Defence People said [2]:
“National security, global stability, and avoiding ever more dangerous impacts from climate change are all parts of the same equation. Putin’s weaponisation of energy makes clear that security and prosperity lie with the clean energy transition, not with continued reliance on fossil fuels. Strength, for a country like the UK, lies not just in acting on this, but in being a leader, to bring other nations along, whether at the G7, NATO or climate talks at COP30.”
