Commenting on the news that countries party to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) have agreed a deal to establish binding emissions targets for shipping and a global carbon pricing scheme [1], Gareth Redmond-King, Head of International Programme at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:

"The IMO deal is not all that it could have been, but like COP29 in Baku, what it does signal is the world’s multi-lateral bodies are continuing to work to move the clean transition to net zero forward, despite the United States stepping back from many of the international bodies and treaties.

"COP30, under Brazil's leadership, will similarly see the world press on to tackle the next steps on climate change, without the US; they are not blocking everyone else from acting, but rather sidelining themselves."
