Commenting on the news that Mark Carney's Liberal Party has won the Canadian election, Gareth Redmond-King, Head of International Programme at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:

"Mark Carney has been a significant leader on climate change in previous roles, and as Governor of the Bank of England was outspoken on the threats to financial stability posed by climate change.

"Whatever the domestic politics around specific policies might be, his election leaves Canada firmly alongside most of the world's nations which have shown they remain committed to working together on climate action, even without the US. Beyond Carney, the G7 has recently seen two other leaders elected on relatively ambitious climate change commitments in Keir Starmer and Friedrich Merz. And it is important to remember that 85% of clean energy investment happens outside the US."
