Commenting on the figures for September’s new car sales released by New Automotive, Colin Walker, Head of Transport at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:

“Demand for electric cars is up again and factoring in the flexibilities the car industry lobbied for in the UK’s EV policy, sales are now ahead of where they need to be to hit this year’s target. That would be two years in a row that the targets would have been hit and drivers are making hundreds of pounds of savings each year by making the switch to electric.

"But the Government bowing to industry pressure to introduce further flexibilities means manufacturers could now push more plug-in hybrid cars which burn 350% more fuel than claimed, [1] and could cost regular families hundreds of pounds a year more to run than an EV. This will affect ordinary families who may struggle to get their hands on a second hand EV in the future where the savings are more than a thousand pounds a year." [2]
