Commenting on the news that Nigel Topping has been named as the preferred candidate to be the next Chair of the Climate Change Committee (CCC) [1], Alasdair Johnstone from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:

“The record-breaking temperatures this week are a timely reminder of the need for clear evidence around reaching net zero, which we need to do to stop producing emissions and prevent the worst impacts of climate change.

"Evidence-led decision making has never been more important and the CCC plays a vital role in ensuring all Parliamentarians understand what climate change is, what is driving it and what the solutions are to tackling it.

"With some seeking to use the UK's target of net zero by 2050 as a political dividing line, organisations like the CCC and its leaders have an important role in explaining what this actually means for the UK's overall climate ambition."
