Responding to comments by Reform UK's Hull and East Yorkshire mayor Luke Campbell, who said at a meeting that he is "all for" cleaner air and green energy [1], Alasdair Johnstone from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:

"The net zero economy in Hull is central to providing jobs and prosperity, so it would be a brave political leader that would be advocating to unpick all that. Of the UK’s £83bn net zero economy, the Yorkshire and Humber region is adding more than £6bn and 70,000 jobs to the local economy. [2]

"There’s clear conflict between some of the political rhetoric at the national level and the lived reality of politicians at a local level, who find on their doorstep jobs dependent on clean energy investment. Alongside this is people's direct experience of climate change impacts where communities have seen worsening flooding, drought and heatwaves."
