Responding to news from Autotrader that two EVs - the Tesla 3 and the Jaguar I-pace - were the fastest selling used cars in July to date, Colin Walker, Head of Transport at the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), said:
“We already know that demand for new EVs continues to grow, with sales in the first 6 months of 2025 up 35% on the first six months of 2024. [1] But it’s not just new EVs that are flying out of the forecourts. News that the two fastest selling second-hand cars in July to date were EVs - with EVs also the joint fastest selling fuel type - is proof that the demand for EVs is very much there on the used market where most of us buy our cars.
“And it’s no surprise. Price parity between used EVs and their petrol equivalents has been reached, meaning the savings that come from their cheaper running costs can be enjoyed from the moment drivers get their hands on the keys. Analysis from the ECIU found that the best-selling EVs of 2024 save their owners £1600 a year over a petrol. [2]
“The demand for used EVs is impressive, with second-hand EV sales growing 59% in the first quarter of 2025. [3] But this growth is dependent on supply - the quicker that new EVs are sold, the quicker the used EV market will grow. But the Government’s recent weakening of its EV sales targets risks suppressing new EV sales growth. [4] This in turn will stunt the growth of the second-hand market, leaving many of us who rely on the used market to get our cars stuck driving dirtier and more expensive petrol cars in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis”.
