Commenting on criticism of UK wind power by US President Donald Trump today, Dr Simon Cran-McGreehin, Head of Analysis at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:
"Wind power is one of the UK's great success stories, boosting our energy security by helping to cut the amount of imported fuel for power generation from two-thirds a decade ago to under half last year.
"And with North Sea oil and gas in irreversible decline and fossil fuels controlled largely by actors such as Putin, wind power is key to the UK's future energy security. Just one large new offshore wind farm provides as much electricity as from burning the gas that might be produced by any new licences, and CfDs help to stabilise power prices in the face of volatile international gas markets.
"With the Government investing in UK wind industry supply chains, there is the opportunity to bring more green jobs to the UK, boosting the net zero economy that grew by 10% in 2024." [1, 2]
