Responding to the Conservatives announcing a new economic plan [1] Alasdair Johnstone of the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:
“Farmers are already feeling the impacts of a changing climate, with this year’s harvest now the worst on record following extreme heat and drought. [2]Likewise, the uncomfortable heat has left the elderly hotter and poorer in homes that are hard to keep cool.
“The point that’s often left out of the politics is that reaching net zero emissions is scientifically the only way the world has to bring the climate back into balance and stop ever worsening extremes that will become impossible to adapt to.
“Slow progress on building regulations has left many families with higher bills during the two gas crises the UK has been hit by in the past few years, but these kind of regulations can also help to keep homes cool. Likewise, improving soil health and planting hedges and trees not only helps farmers get through extreme wet and dry conditions, but also helps reduce our overall carbon emissions.”
