Military aid called to assist Gwynedd wildfire: comment

“Fire and rescue services have been hard at work across the UK this week, from the Cairngorms to the Peak District and North Wales, battling to contain large wildfires which are growing in intensity and frequency because of climate change.

"Reports that requests are being made for aerial support from the military to contain the wildfire raging in Gwynedd is a sobering reminder of how our increasingly dry and hot summers are challenging every part of our national resilience, including our food supply chains, public health, and military readiness.

"The Fire Brigades Union’s request today for an emergency UK-wide wildfire summit highlights that more needs to be done to adapt and prepare for the realities of a warming planet, but the threat presented by wildfires to the emergency services and local communities will continue to grow until we address the root cause and reach net zero emissions – the only solution we have to stopping climate change.”
