Responding to reports that Lancashire Mayor Dame Andrea Jenkyns has “courted” US energy companies about fracking in the UK [1], Alasdair Johnstone from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:
"The public continue to be sceptical about fracking, with polls showing support barely breaks 20% [2]. The Conservatives when in Government learnt to their cost how contentious fracking is as an issue, bringing down a Prime Minister in the process. It is clear that other members of Reform are more wary of the issue, with Reform-led Lancashire and North Yorkshire councils both opposing fracking projects in their areas [3].
"There appears to be a clear disconnect between the national level leadership of Reform UK and its local representatives, not just on fracking, but on their approach to renewable energy generally, with Reform Mayor for Hull and East Yorkshire recently saying “he’s all for green energy” [4]. This is perhaps explained by the tens of thousands of jobs, billions of economic benefit [5] and clear polling evidence showing going support for onshore and offshore wind and solar among the British public."
