Commenting on the new Opportunity Auto campaign launched today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) [1] Colin Walker, Head of Transport at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), said:

“As this report recognises, the economic opportunities available to our car industry will be realised by embracing the transition to building electric vehicles. Conversely, as a report from CBI Economics has shown, going slow could see the industry’s economic output fall by billions, with hundreds of thousands of jobs being lost. [2]

“New EVs are already rolling off Nissan’s production lines in Sunderland, with a host of new EVs set to start emerging from JLR’s factories in the West Midlands. With global interest in EVs increasing as drivers, and countries, seek to reduce their vulnerability to volatile oil markets over which they have no control, [3] the UK’s car industry can secure its future by embracing electrification. One of the ways in which the Government can support the industry in making this shift is maintain a stable regulatory environment, and resist calls for measures such as the Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate to be watered down”.
