The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) is delighted to welcome Hugh Montgomery, Professor of Intensive Care Medicine and Director of the Institute for Human Health and Performance at University College London, to its Advisory Board.
Professor Montgomery was a founding member of the UK Climate and Health Council. He was a co-author on the 2009 UCL-Lancet Commission on climate change and health, and is a co-chair of the 2015 Commission.
Welcoming Professor Montgomery to the Advisory Board, ECIU Director Richard Black said he would help highlight the threats and opportunities surrounding heath and climate change.
Professor Montgomery said: “Climate change is rightly coming to be seen as a serious global health issue. The impacts of climate change, notably is areas such as food production, water scarcity and heat stress, will increasingly threaten the health of millions of people around the world.
“Effectively addressing these impacts, on the other hand, will be beneficial not just in terms of people’s health, but also in avoiding the financial cost of dealing with these impacts.”
Richard Black said: “We’re delighted that Hugh Montgomery is joining the ECIU Advisory Board at such a critical time for action on climate change.
“Health is a vitally important, but under-reported, aspect of the climate change debate, and we look forward to working with Hugh to raise this issue with a wider audience.”
