Comment on increase in marine heatwaves
Study finds ocean life is being exposed to longer and more frequent marine heatwaves as climate changes

Commenting on a new study released today which finds that ocean life is being exposed to longer and more frequent marine heatwaves as the climate changes, Richard Benyon, MP for Newbury and a former Environment Minister said:
“Life in the ocean is already being affected by climate change, and this report confirms that the impacts are set to grow unless governments live up to the commitments they made in the Paris Agreement.
“The latest science shows that emissions need to fall to zero around mid-century in order to keep global warming within safe limits, and few nations have so far committed to that, including our own.
“Next week we welcome leaders of 52 Commonwealth nations to the UK, and with many of them being ocean or coastal states it’s vital that we discuss how we can bring carbon emissions to zero as well as how we eliminate plastic waste.”
