“Alok Sharma said on Monday [2] that crises facing the world now are a reason to speed up, not slow down, on world leaders’ promises made six months ago in Glasgow. Sourcing fossil fuels elsewhere can only ever be a very short-term means of ending reliance on Russian oil and gas, and one that maintains high costs in the system.

“With faster renewables roll-out, and energy efficiency measures to cut demand this plan would see the EU leading the way, building momentum on climate action ahead of COP27. The measures will not only speed emissions cuts from Europe – nearly 7% of global emissions – but will ultimately replace consumers’ exposure to volatile fossil fuel prices with cheaper, reliable, homegrown renewable energy.”
