Responding to a new report from the Centre for Policy Studies which argues that fuel duty and vehicle excise duty should be replaced with a per-mile charging system [1], Colin Walker, Transport Analyst at the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said,
“Under a pay as you drive system, EVs will remain significantly cheaper to run than petrol cars.
“If an electric Nissan Leaf driver paid the equivalent fuel duty cost, which is about 5p per mile, of a similar petrol model car like the Nissan Juke, it would still be more than £500 a year cheaper to run.”[2]

2. Calculations considered the total costs involved in fueling, maintaining, taxing, servicing and insuring a petrol Nissan Juke and an electric Nissan Leaf over the course of a year.
Scenarios were based on the vehicles being driven 8,000 miles a year and on typical driving, fuelling and charging behaviours.
