Commenting on a new report published today that identifies how up to 800 jobs could be created over the next 15 years at the Grangemouth site, where Scotland's loss-making oil refinery is set to close [1], Jess Ralston, energy analyst at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:

"The geological decline of the North Sea over the last few decades has resulted in the UK producing less and less of the fuel it uses, a trend which will continue as the North Sea's inevitable decline continues. This - combined with volatile gas and electricity prices that are a result of chaos on the international markets because of actions by people like Putin -  has led to Ineos deciding to close Grangemouth, a huge concern for the people and communities that rely on it for employment.

"Setting out a future for the area is vital so that the people of Grangemouth can have good jobs in new industries that could last their whole lifetimes. There are opportunities from the net zero economy, which grew by 10% GVA last year [2],that the community cannot afford to miss out on, so all eyes will now be on the UK and Scottish Governments to deliver a more secure future for those people."

@jessralston2 of @ECIU_UK on 800 potential green jobs at Grangemouth:

"Net zero economy grew by 10% GVA in 2024... so all eyes will now be on the UK and Scottish Governments to deliver a more secure future for those people."
