Government data confirms renewables generation record in 2025 and US LNG imports up 38% on year before: comment

“Growth in British renewables, particularly solar, to a new generation record in 2025 means that we need less foreign gas for power, helping with our energy independence. With gas prices recently soaring to a 4-month high, the renewables that we have on the system help to shift older, less efficient gas plants off and stabilise our bills too; large wind farms lowered the wholesale electricity price by almost a third last year. [2] 
 
"As the North Sea continues its inevitable decline - irrespective of new licenses - with around 90% of the oil and gas already extracted even by the industry's own ambitious estimates [3], our imports are set to increase unless we start to tackle gas demand. Imports of Trump's gas were up around 40% last year, with the US remaining our second largest import source behind Norway. But around eight in ten Brits say they would be concerned about the UK becoming reliant on gas from the US, including more than 3 in 4 Conservative voters and around two-thirds of Reform voters. [4] 
 
"While interest in electric heat pumps is up, slower progress than other countries like France and the Netherlands in shifting away from gas boilers means that conflicts like that in the Middle East can affect us more. [5] If we want energy independence, shifting towards electric technologies is key as well as continuing to roll out renewables."
