Commenting on the National Energy System Operator Review of Electricity System Operation during Extreme Heat 22–26 June 2026 published today (19 Oct) [1] Jess Ralston, analyst at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU):
"The June events resulted from a combination of factors including record-breaking temperatures reducing gas power station availability, interconnector volatility and lower wind output. It's no secret that the energy system is changing and how it's managed is changing too - the tools NESO have available worked as intended and the system stayed stable.
"Rather than supporting more dependence on gas, these events reinforce the need to reach net zero - the only solution to preventing further climate change - while investing in the grid to support a modern electricity system. Renewables and electrification are how we will get energy independence from actors like Putin, with gas volatility costing UK households thousands over back-to-back crises, [2]meanwhile large wind lowered wholesale prices by a third last year."
