Commenting on DNV’s 2025 UK Energy Transition Outlook (ETO) report [1] Jess Ralston, Head of Energy at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:
"Decarbonising the UK's power, and so achieving energy security, is still all to play for. Getting as close as possible to clean power would be a remarkable achievement given the Government inherited some uncertainty around net zero policies which had dampened investment into renewables and led to a disastrous renewables auction round in 2023, but soon after the Election, it upped the budget and clearly set out its stall; that clean power was the route to energy independence and lower bills. Maxing out this years auction will be important for ensuring our offshore wind sector achieves its full potential and helps to reduce household bills, by replacing volatile gas which is currently rising in cost again.
"However, it's equally important that there's more progress on heat pumps and insulation, which are essential to lowering gas demand and achieving energy independence, and are currently off-track. Taking an example from the Zero Emission Vehicle mandate, which we're on course to meet, and ramping up the Clean Heat Market Mechanism for heat pumps could be one route to grow that supply chain and get more homes using British electricity, rather than increasingly foreign gas."
