Commenting on reports that ExxonMobil is to close the Fife Ethylene chemical plant in Scotland [1], Jess Ralston, Energy Analyst at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), said:

"While job losses in any community are difficult, they are especially felt in communities that rely heavily on certain sites. The decline of the UK's industry, including chemicals, began decades ago, being hard hit by events like Brexit and the covid pandemic and high energy prices triggered by the Ukraine war and gas crisis have added billions to energy costs.

"The Government has committed to removing some network and policy costs, but wholesale prices of gas and electricity are still high and that creates difficulty, in the UK as well as Europe where another ExxonMobil refinery has just been shut."
