Commenting on the Future Energy Scenarios 2025 Economics Annex published by the National Energy System Operator (NESO) [1], Jess Ralston, Head of Energy at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:

"After decades of under-investment, upgrading the grid to unlock more British renewables and improve efficiency will create greater energy independence for the UK so that a future gas crisis won’t leave households, businesses and industry facing incredibly high bills.

"At the same time, moving to electric vehicles and heat pumps will limit our foreign gas imports as the North Sea continues its inevitable decline, making us less vulnerable to actors like Putin. The energy crisis has cost the UK £180bn, the same as it costs to run healthcare in  NHS England for a year [2]. These net zero investments will protect against volatile international gas markets."
