Commenting on news that global oil prices have jumped after Israel attacked Iran overnight [1], Jess Ralston, analyst at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:
"Oil and gas prices have always been volatile and fluctuate around conflicts and other geopolitical events. This will always be the case, with UK prices reflecting what happens on these international markets - we have no significant control over prices given the North Sea is a small and declining basin.
"Energy independence will come from building out renewables, insulating homes and replacing gas boilers with electric heat pumps as well as moving to electric vehicles. The ongoing gas crisis has showed us that with billions of pounds of taxpayers’ money spent on subsidising energy bills, we can't afford to remain as vulnerable the next time oil and gas prices spike - but have we learned our lesson?"
