Commenting on NESO's announcement that Great Britain achieved a new maximum solar record on 8 July between 12:00 – 12.30pm, with solar generating nearly 40% of the electricity mix [1], Jess Ralston, analyst at the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), said:

"Thanks to schemes like Contracts for Difference securing investment in the UK's solar and wind over the past decade, our electricity is becoming more British and clearly it’s very possible to run power grids with large amounts of solar power.

"Every bit of renewable power we get reduces the amount of gas we need to import from abroad as the North Sea continues its inevitable decline. Volatile gas prices cost us £140bn during the crisis, while renewables like solar help to stabilise bills and shield households from the political meddling of foreign actors like Putin."
