Commenting on analysis by the Fraunhofer Institute which has found that Plug-in Hybrid Cars consume three times more fuel than their manufacturers claim [1], Colin Walker, Head of Transport at the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit, said:

“Here we have further evidence that PHEVs are not delivering what is promised of them. Despite this latest report finding that they consume 300% more fuel than their manufacturers claim, they are being misleadingly marketed as cars that will help save people money while also cutting emissions. This chimes with our own analysis showing that hybrids actually cost more to own and run than a regular petrol car.

“Despite this, recent changes by the UK Government to its Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate policy could actually incentivise manufacturers to sell more of these vehicles. Manufacturers have been given the green light to earn more of the credits they need to hit their zero emission vehicle sales targets through the sale of hybrids that produce emissions that are little better than a regular petrol car."
