Commenting on figures published today (12 Oct) showing UK gas prices have risen to the highest levels since December 2022, [1] [2] Jess Ralston, energy analyst at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:

"Gas prices hitting levels last seen during the 2022 energy crisis [3]are a reminder that the UK remains exposed to wars and instability thousands of miles away because we're still so reliant on gas, particularly for heating our homes."

"At exactly the moment that our dependency on gas is driving up our bills and harming our economy, reports suggest Government support for heat pumps could be cut. That risks households being unable to switch from gas boilers, meaning the UK is even more subject to the volatile global gas markets that have caused repeated bill crises. Heat pumps are a matter of national security as gas will increasingly be imported from the likes of Trump as the North Sea continues its inevitable decline.

"More North Sea drilling won't shield people from internationally-set gas prices. The only lasting way to improve energy security is to use less gas, through better insulated homes, more heat pumps and clean British power."
