Commenting on the launch of the Government’s new campaign to show the savings and benefits of making the move to EVs [1] Colin Walker, Head of Transport at the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), said:

“EV sales in the UK are booming, up 24% in 2024 and accounting for almost one in four new cars sold. [2] Yet, while millions of families have made the move to EVs, many more are being held back from making the switch by persistent misinformation about EVs and the EV transition - keeping people in dirtier and more expensive petrol cars for longer.

“The scale of this misinformation has been flagged as a major issue by the House of Lords, [3] and is why this new Government campaign is necessary. With our own analysis showing that second-hand EVs can save drivers £1450 a year the moment they get their hands on the keys, [4] improving people’s understanding of the realities of EV ownership will give more drivers the confidence to make the move. In reality the UK is a frontrunner when it comes to making the shift to the electric cars of the future. There are now over 1.8 million EVs on the UK’s roads, [5] increasingly powered by electrons generated by British wind and solar farms. And more and more EVs are beginning to roll off British production lines - from the electric Mini in Oxford, to the Nissan Leaf in Sunderland, and the new electric Jags set to emerge in the West Midlands”.
