Commenting on statistics showing the total number of retrofit heat pump installations for 2025 [1], Simon Cran-McGreehin, Head of Analysis at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:

“British homeowners are increasing opting for heat pumps, with tens of thousands installed last year, but the current gas price crisis is a clear reminder that we’re still very dependent on gas for heating our homes in this country.

“The official data on North Sea gas is very clear that even with more drilling, output will continue to decline significantly in the coming years, it’s a mature basin that’s running out of gas. The key question here is if the UK is happy as a country to become ever more dependent on foreign gas to heat its homes?

“If the answer to that is no, then electric heat pumps are the only real answer, and unless installations ramp up quickly, the UK is increasingly at the mercy of conflict in the Middle East and Trump in the US. Heat pumps are a matter of energy security and therefore national security.

“Gas boiler companies have lobbied against heat pumps, successfully delaying and watering down policy while also, in the words of a minister under the last Government, running ‘campaigns of misinformation’. [2] This has undoubtedly reduced the number of heat pumps installed in the UK, leaving the country more dependent on foreign gas, reducing UK energy security.”
