Commenting on the report from the Institute for Fiscal Studies on consumers’ electricity bills falling if the government promotes time-varying prices, Jess Ralston, Head of Energy at Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:

“Recent years have shown the costs of reliance on gas, with households and businesses exposed to unprecedented price spikes during what have been essentially back-to-back energy crises. At the same time, heatwaves and other extreme weather events are becoming a more obvious cause for concern, affecting farmers and food, health, and transport and energy infrastructure.

"The question is not whether decarbonisation requires investment, but what is the alternative, and will it cost less? As the report points out, renewable generation is helping to reduce wholesale electricity prices by displacing gas, lowering prices by around a third last year. But there have been decades of under investment in networks that is now required.

"The challenge is less about slowing down - with consumers increasingly backing net zero tech like solar and electric vehicles as sales grow - and more about delivering it as efficiently as possible, to ensure all households and businesses benefit."
