Commenting on new figures [1] from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) that new electric vehicle sales share reached 28.3% in September - with a record 99,199 battery electric cars joining UK roads, Alasdair Johnstone, Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU):
"Against a backdrop of a new record of £2 a litre for diesel [2] and growing uncertainty over US diesel exports, 100,000 new EVs on Britain’s roads represent more than a sales milestone. If the Government is serious about what ministers have called getting off the oil and gas rollercoaster, its current consultation on slowing the switch to electric vehicles appears at odds with that ambition.
“The industry has met ZEV targets for two consecutive years and looks set to do so again, thanks in part to the flexibilities that manufacturers themselves lobbied for. Those vehicles are now feeding a booming second-hand EV market, helping ordinary families cut their driving costs during the cost of living crisis.
"UK-based manufacturers have been slow in the race to electric cars, but with EV sales booming around the world and most of the cars made in the UK exported, if the Government wants a stable car industry then more targeted support might be needed, but watering down EV targets will only leave the UK and its drivers more vulnerable."
