Commenting on the electricity margin notice issued today by the National Energy System Operator (NESO) [1] from Jess Ralston, energy analyst at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), said:
"Climate change has been hitting harvests, but it’s now also hitting our power system, from gas plants being harder to cool to reduced capacity to transmit electricity on power lines. With high temperatures across Europe too, France's nuclear fleet is being impacted as the reactors shut down if they can't be cooled. This supply crunch comes at the same time that demand is rising from air con and fans.
“Every year, the NESO uses various tools like Electricity Margin Notices to manage supply and demand to ensure that there's a safe buffer and it's taking action early today to ensure that our energy system remains safe, resilient and operates effectively as it has done for many years.
“In the past these notices have been issued just in winter, but climate change means that extreme temperatures will continue to get rise until we reach net zero emissions, the only scientific way to halt climate change."
