New record price of diesel: comment

"Families are facing a double whammy of rising pump prices and energy bills with Trump’s war in the Middle East sending oil and gas prices soaring yet again. For all the focus on drilling in the North Sea, its output has been declining for decades and has no real impact on the prices we pay which are clearly set by international markets.
 
"What will permanently bring down the nation’s driving bill is the switch to electric cars, but here the Government could be about to pile more pressure on families’ cost of living by watering down sales targets. This would reduce competition between manufacturers and so stem the flow of electric cars that can generate savings of more than a thousand pounds a year, particularly when bought second-hand, which is what most families do.
 
As Trump is toying with the idea of banning US diesel exports, things could get a lot worse and it's yet another reminder of how vulnerable UK households and our cost of living is to events outside of our control. The Government has talked about the need to get off this oil and gas rollercoaster, but slowing EV sales would do exactly the opposite of that, strapping us in for longer."
