PM to chair Cobra meeting on extreme heat: comment

Climate change is piling the pressure on a new government which has made tackling the cost-of-living crisis its first priority - with farmers warning of potentially severe economic losses, and further hikes in the price of food ahead of what’s likely to be one of the worst harvests on record [2]. Even the political football that is potholes are being made worse by extreme heat melting the roads [3].

“With an estimated 1,100 of the deaths we saw in the May and June heatwaves being directly attributable to man-made climate change [4], the new Prime Minister will need a plan beyond this Cobra meeting. Most worryingly for a government which is about to set out its “ten-year plan” for Britain, the strain which climate change is placing on our national resilience and food and economic security will only continue to grow until we reach net zero emissions – and all eyes will be on decisions the government makes on key carbon reducing policies such as the Zero Emission Vehicle mandate”.
