Commenting on proposals from Reform UK that they would to scrap VAT and green levies on household energy bills if they win power [1] Jess Ralston, Head of Energy at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:
"The biggest driver of higher electricity bills over the energy crisis has been the UK’s reliance on gas, with prices set by volatile international markets, and we may see this effect take hold again as oil and gas prices are up because of conflict in the Middle East.
"Renewables provide a buffer to spiking prices, shielding households - wind lowered the wholesale electricity price by around a third last year. [2] This wouldn't have happened without investment as a result of long-term government contracts to secure that power. Any government that rips up these contracts could damage investor confidence, not just in the renewables sector but across the economy, which could in turn slow down the UK's ailing growth."
