Commenting on the "imminent" decision from the UK Government on whether to approve the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea [1] Jess Ralston, analyst at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:
"Let’s be clear, approving Jackdaw won't do anything meaningful to bring down energy bills or improve the UK's energy security, which the Government has said is its priority given high levels of public concern. The field is expected to supply only a minuscule share of UK gas demand for a limited period, and the gas will still be sold at international market prices, leaving households and businesses exposed to the same volatile global markets that have driven up bills in recent years by the actions of Presidents Putin and Trump.
"The debate around the North Sea obscures the point that 90% of the oil and gas has been drained from the basin already [2]and that unless the UK increase the rate at which homes are helped to switch to heat pumps, families will become more and more vulnerable to the decisions of leaders of other countries.
"Against a backdrop of a summer of extreme heat, and rising public concern, eyes will now turn to the Rosebank oil field and the government’s consultation on watering down electric car targets, both of which would have a huge impact on the UK’s climate change emissions. For understandably concerned communities, the only way to long-term job security is to make the transition to offshore wind and other clean industries."
