Responding to news from Autotrader than used EVs are selling five days faster than used petrol models, Colin Walker, Transport Analyst at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit, said:

“It comes as no surprise that used EVs are selling so fast, and that an ever-increasing number of savvy families are turning their backs on paying a ‘petrol premium’ to run their old cars and trading them in for second-hand EVs. After all, our own analysis has found that used EVs can save their owners £1450 a year from the moment they get their hands on the keys. [1]

“While the Government’s introduction of a 3p per mile tax on EVs is understandably causing concern that it could undermine consumer confidence, it does not appear to be holding people back from making the move to EVs on the second-hand market. After all, money talks, and families across the UK are clearly working out that, even with this new tax in place, a second-hand EV will remain capable of delivering some very significant savings.

“Sustaining this impressive growth in the UK’s used EV market requires supply, and this will come by sustaining the UK’s impressive growth in new EV sales. The Government’s ZEV mandate has an important role to play by fostering competition between manufacturers, lowering prices and driving up sales as more and more people find they can afford to make the switch”.
