Commenting on the heatwave in Wales, Laura Dunn, Senior Associate at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), said:

For the second month in a row, temperature records are set to be broken across Wales – with a red weather warning in place across much of South Wales, and temperatures set to climb 37 degrees. That would not only smash the previous record for the hottest day in Wales by over three degrees, set in 2000, but would also come within a whisker of toppling the warmest temperature ever recorded in Wales of 37.1 degrees, set during the 2022 heatwave. [1]

“What used to be once in a generation heatwaves are becoming increasingly common across Wales, causing widespread disruption to schools, transport, and businesses – and presenting a profound risk to the health of the elderly and vulnerable. The sobering fact is that – until we reach net zero emissions, the only scientific solution to stopping climate change – the mercury will continue to climb, and these protracted periods of extreme heat will continue to grow in frequency and intensity.”
