Wildfires at least twice as likely in France and at least 20 times more likely in Spain - new WWA study: comment

Commenting on a new World Weather Attribution (WWA) report that finds human-induced climate change made the extreme fire weather that fuelled the recent destructive wildfires at least twice as likely in France and at least 20 times more likely in Spain, [1] Gareth Redmond-King, International analyst at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:
“Climate change doesn’t light the spark for wildfires, but it certainly provides the fuel. Successive periods of extreme heat - made hotter, more frequent, and more intense by climate change - have turned once green spaces into tinder-dry fuel for the spark, when it comes.
"It's our burning of coal, oil and gas that has caused climate change, making fires much more likely, and much more dangerous - creating literal fire-storms in France and Spain. This gets worse and worse - more and more deadly - the longer we keep adding planet-heating emissions to the atmosphere. Only stopping burning fossil fuels and achieving the balance of net zero emissions can stop climate change from fuelling these fires into an ever more dangerous future."
